Are the cows on strike?

So does anyone know what's up with the price of milk? I went to Wal-mart today, and a gallon of the store brand milk was just under $4.50 a gallon! I held off, and went to HEB, where it was only $3.30 or so a gallon. Are Wal-mart cows in negotiations for a higher salary? I about choked. When your family goes through about 4 gallons a week, that's quite a good chunk of change out of the grocery budget!

Maybe my husband's idea about getting a farm with a couple of cows isn't so bad... Think my breast pump would work on them? ;-)

I SO hear ya Tami! We were wondering the same thing! Even milk at Sams has gone up to about $3.64. I haven't figured out yet what the deal is, but I hope this will not be the norm!

there is not enough corn to feed dairy cows now that so much is being used for ethanol. Prices in the $4.00 range will be the norm from now on...this according to yahoo finance news and the SA paper

We began using more calcium enriched apple and orange juice when we lived in Hawaii since it was cheaper than $4 on base and $7-$8 off base for a gallon of milk. I also use powder milk for all baking and for some cream sauces.

BTW, just to go back to my farming roots, the cow in the pic is not a dairy cow and thus only produces yummy rib-eye steak (which is also outrageous, but not the subject of debate) and leather :-)

Glad to see you are feeling better!

LOL, Vivian, I think you are the only person in my acquaintance who would know the difference in the cows! I sure didn't - I told everyone that Kelly had a city wife who didn't know anything about it!

And I love powdered milk! I use it for all baking and cooking, only straight drinking and cereal gets the real stuff, but that's still a lot of milk! And if I could find pulp free - calcium enriched oj I would buy it, but my kids are anti-pulp.

And the headaches are better, but now Kelly and I are fighting either sinus stuff or colds.

Tami, I know you have 5 girls, but even your family couldn't keep up with a DAIRY COW!!! A beef cow gives milk just like a dairy cow, just not as much. A dairy cow gives 5+ gallons a day----even y'all couldn't use that much. Many people who keep a family milk cow either use a beef cow or a cross-breed. So your picture is just fine.
