I have a cookware curse. No, really, I do. It seems that no matter how much I spend on cookware, it just doesn't seem to last as long as I think it should. Maybe it's because of constant use? Anyway, when my skillet, my big super-family sized skillet, needed to be replaced - AGAIN - I decided to bite the bullet and buy another cast iron skillet.
I received a
10 inch skillet from my grandmother a couple years back, and have loved it. Since she's had hers for over 50 years, I have hopes that maybe I can hold on to mine for a while. So I decided to order
this skillet from Amazon. Boy, is it BIG.
This is my new skillet next to an older 10 inch skillet, just to get an idea of the size of this thing. And it is heavy, too. But you know what? It cooks wonderfully! And, I can brown 5 pounds of ground beef at the same time in it! And relatively quickly, too, because of the great heat distribution. And it came pre-seasoned. Now I am thinking I need a 12 inch one to round out my collection. :-)

I was just telling my hubby that I wanted one of these. Saw it in Cracker barrel and reminded me how great they are. He said "annoying to clean." Hoping to get one after the move. Have to be careful w/ amount of lbs as we are only allowed so many.
Jeanie, it's not bad to cleanat all because it is pre-seasoned. You just get a cheap scrubby brush and scrub it with hot water while the pan is still warm. So far we've had no problems with it or the 50 year old one of my grandmother's. But it does weigh a ton (give or take a pound) so yeah, you might wanna wait.
